Our mission is to provide the community with the highest quality of fire and rescue services in order to save lives, protect property and control incidents. This will be done through the teamwork of a well-trained experienced group of firefighters and continued education of the community on preventative measures and the use of the latest technology and equipment. It is also our goal to maintain a good rapport with the citizens of Sylvania through community services. Our Fire Department is staffed by 6 fulltime firefighters and supported by an additional 27 volunteers. The department carries an ISO rating of Class 3.
The fire department provides fire protection, rescue, haz-mat, and first
response to medical calls.

Fire Safety Education

Sylvania firefighters conduct fire safety classes throughout the year. These classes are taught at schools, daycares, scout meetings, and wherever requested. Our firefighters will be happy to visit your club, organization or community meeting to discuss fire safety.

Home Safety Inspections

At your request, fire department personnel will come to your home and conduct a safety inspection. They will offer suggestions to make your home as safe as possible.

Burn Permits

The City of Sylvania prohibits outdoor burning without a permit. If you live inside the city limits of Sylvania you will need to come to the Fire Department to obtain a burn permit. Fire Department personnel will issue a permit based on weather conditions for safe outdoor burning.The permit is free of charge.

  • Outdoor burning guidelines
    1. burning is limited to yard debris only (leaves, pinestraw, dead tree limbs)
    2. burning is only permitted between the hours of 9am – 6pm
    3. fires must be completely exhausted by 6pm
    4. a working water hose should be kept nearby
